Dr. Kindred's Korner

I saw an friend that I hadn't seen for awhile and the first thing he asked was, "What have you been doing lately? Are you retired?" I guess when you get to be a big kid that question is bound to come up. I am one of those people that have found what I love to do, helping people to optimal health through chiropractic so I don't feel it is work. I plan on adjusting as long as possible and that is why I moved to our present location and went to a three day schedule. What I do need help with is getting more patients to help. If everyone would tell 3 family members, friends or coworkers about us, I would truly appreciate it. Don't worry I always will have time for my special regular patients along with the new ones. Sandra's Spin on Things

Next week we celebrate the 4th of July which ask us to stop and think what Independence really is. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary states Independence: Freedom from outside control or support. We help people to become free from pain, stress and general dis-ease. We do this using chiropractic and massage. Our bodies were made to live in a healthy state, but our day to day life sometimes throws us off. If you think our services are just for auto injuries, headaches backaches you will be pleasantly surprised to see it is for so much more. Call for a complimentary consultation, where you tell Dr. Kindred what is bothering you and he can tell you how chiropractic and massage can help you. We also offer a $24 one hour massage for first time patients, so that you can experience how awesome a therapeutic massage can be.

How to Cut Stress & Organize Your Way to Calm

Experts point out that, for many stressed-out individuals, the solution to serenity lies in getting organized. But where to start? Here are a few tips for simplifying your life and putting you on the road to tranquility.

&bul; Cut down on nonproductive diversions like television viewing. Clean out your home and office, and design a plan to prevent clutter e.g. spend 15 minutes a day declutter by throwing out, donating or recycling 26 items.

&bul; Compile monthly, weekly and daily "to do" lists. Prioritize items, and group together errands that can be completed in a single outing. When possible, delegate responsibilities to other family members.

&bul; Be realistic: prioritize tasks, consider proposed undertakings thoroughly before committing to them and eliminate unnecessary activities.

&bul; Keep a daily log in a bound planner or software program. Review and augment your schedule at the start and end of each day, e.g. chunk down to 3 things that are most important with one thing that must be done. Commit to sticking to that plan. Everything else is a bonus.# Look into budgeting software programs and money management sites. Financial concerns are a leading source of trepidation: getting your accounts in order are dramatically slash your stress level.

Celebrate with your friends
April 26, 2017

"Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold." - Joseph Parr

Sandra's Spin on Things

This saying has been just coming into my head. I said to myself, self, how does this relate to our patients. The new patients are silver we need them so that we can continue to help people to regain their health. If you are not building, you are falling behind. So we need some silver. The big one is the gold from them, there hills. We are so thankful for all our patients, some are new and then there are loyal patients that are like family. They were here when our children were young and have been with us through some good times and other the other times. They refer their family and friends and encourage Dr. Kindred when he has meets and me with my tennis, did I say we are going to Sectionals next month. When we think about a lady that had headaches every single day of her life for years and then one day came in a said I woke up and didn't have a headache, she had tears in her eyes as she thanked Dr. Kindred, he said, "It is not me, but chiropractic, I just removed the subluxations (bones pinching the nerves) which makes your body have dis-ease. You made the commitment to take the time needed and do the things I suggested and now you are reaping the benefits. Now we have therapeutic massage that enhances the process. Martha strengthens the muscles so that the adjustments hold better and the patients not only reduce the stress, but the body is further supported in the healing process. So let's make new friends that become patients and you all know how grateful we are for our loyal golden patients. Thanks!!

ATTENTION: Thursday, April 27 we will take our last patient at 4:30 pm and on May 3 we will take the last patient at 10:30 as we will be going out of town to a family celebration and in May Dr. Kindred is speaking at a seminar. I will be checking with you about rescheduling your appointments.

Practical Wellness

Your feet are the foundation of your body. They provide support when you stand, walk, or run. And they also help protect your spine, bones, and soft tissues from damaging stress during movement. Your feet, which play an integral role in biomechanical performance, perform better when all their muscles, arches, and bones are stable and in ideal positions.

A Chain Reaction

Healthcare professionals know alleviating pain in one part of the body often requires treating a different part. For example, pain in your neck could be triggered by a misalignment in your spine, which was caused by unbalanced positioning in your feet.

By stabilizing and balancing the feet, Foot Levelers' functional orthotics enhance your body's performance and efficiency, reduce pain, and contribute to your body wellness.

Am I having a moment
April 1, 2017

Sandra's Spin on Things

I just pressed the wrong button and resent a newsletter from earlier in March. So I will keep this short. This month we will be leaving early on April 27 as we will be celebrating my cousin's birthday in Chicago. We have decided to celebrate life affirming times rather than only getting together in sickness and funerals. Therefore, we will take our last patient 3:00 and we will work through lunch.

Also, Dr. Kindred will also be speaking in Las Vegas at the ChiroSushi Seminar. I don't why they named it ChiroSushi. We will leave early on May 3 and take our last patient at 11:30.

Have a great weekend and we will see you soon.

Have we told you lately, we love referrals

Sandra's Spin on Things

We are always talking about healthy eating habits and exercise. How do you find the exercise that is right for you? It is do something that you like or try something new. You all know that I truly love tennis, but what you don't know is that I started playing after I had my daughter because I thought it may be a good way to get back in shape. At first it was a challenge, but after awhile I truly enjoyed that challenge, the camaraderie, and competition. This last year there was a Pilates Studio that open near our home, I tried it and I liked it. Last, but not least there is walking. You can start with 10 minutes out and 10 minutes back to your home. Walking with your pet or friend adds some enjoyment and as it gets warmer early morning or evening can also be mentally refreshing. About referrals, as you know they are the life blood of any business and we always need your help. We hope you all realize that chiropractic and massage helps your family and friends, and the consultation is at no charge so they can tell Dr. Kindred what problems they are having and he can tell you what course of action is needed. Remember we are still offering a $24 introductory massage so you can experience the benefits of massage. This offer is available for your first massage clients only and is a $65 value.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

Chiropractors take a multifaceted approach to care for sports injuries. First, chiropractors teach their patients to prevent muscle strains by designing safe fitness programs, which include stretching before and after workouts. Next, doctors of chiropractic help athletes stay pain free by correcting a spinal condition called vertebral subluxation, which is often associated with muscle strain.

Vertebral subluxations are areas in the spine where movement is restricted or bones (vertebrae) are out of alignment. Because muscles attach to the spine, these misalignments may aggravate muscle strain. Chiropractors correct vertebral subluxations with gentle and effective maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments. Research shows that this technique may not only alleviate back pain, but it may also quell muscle stiffness in the limbs. For example, chiropractic adjustments to the lower back have been show to reduce the muscle inhibition associated with knee pain (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2999; 22:249-53).

In addition, chiropractors often recommend massage and specialized therapy techniques to ease overworked muscles. The chiropractic approach may also include dietary supplements, such as bromelain, B-complex vitamins, flavonoids, curcumin, passion flower and cayenne. Finally, your chiropractic may advise you to apply cold and/or heat packs to the sure muscle.

Whether you're a professional athlete or a "weekend warrior," chiropractic care may help ward off debilitating sports injuries. So, before hitting the gym, schedule an appointment for a chiropractic sports injury prevention consultation?

Baby it's warm out there
March 19, 2017

Sandra's Spin on Things

"Happiness is not the goal, it's the result." - Unknown

It is getting warm out there and we are fortunate to know about carrying water with us at all times. There are many sports drinks out there beware of the sugary ones and those with lots salt. We have found that coconut water that is plain or pureed fruit added is the best for cramp avoidance. Remember to drink at least 12 oz. at a time for the coconut water to be effective. We are having this warm weather, but hopefully we will cool down, if not swimming anyone.

We can't control the weather, but we can see how chiropractic can help with your problems. There is no charge for a consultation with Dr. Kindred to see how chiropractic can help you to optimal health. Call for an appointment.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

I can bring tears of pain to the eyes of the strongest, most athletic man. My victims, searching for a description of me, compare me with the worst toothache imaginable.

Only I affect the hip, the thigh and back of the leg; sometimes the ankle and foot. I may hit all those points at once or I may skip about from point to point. People often describe me as shooting pains." My victims may think before I strike that they are in perfect health. You can be at the correct weight, your muscles may be perfectly developed, your heart and blood vessels, lungs, digestive system may be functioning in perfect harmony. Yet in an instant I can turn you into a partial invalid. I don't always strike without warning. Many of my victims complain that they have had weak backs for years. Most of the lower back problem is caused by the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and extends from the lower spine down the back of the thigh to the knee. There it divides and one nerves goes down the front and the other down the back of the lower leg. A misalignment in the spinal column can irritate the roots of the sciatic nerve as they pass between the vertebrae. Call for an appointment to check your chiropractic options.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

You feel a sharp pain running down your leg from your low back to your calf. It's difficult to bend at the waist or to walk, and the pain is affecting your daily routine. Sound familiar? Like millions of others, you may be suffering from sciatica. Fortunately, you don't have to put up with leg pain. Sciatica is one of the most common complaints cared for by chiropractors. In fact, Dr. Kindred sees overwhelmingly positive results caring for patients with leg pain. Why is chiropractic so effective? Read on to learn about what causes sciatica and how Dr. Kindred's revolutionary approach can help you. Sciatica is pain that radiates down the buttock and back of the leg. In some cases, this pain may also invade the soles of the feet. Frequently, sciatica is accompanied by low back discomfort, although it may occur in patients with no history of backache.

There is much research that supports the use of chiropractic for sciatica. We have listed a few. 1983; 6:

Scientists surveyed 100 individuals with low-back who underwent chiropractic care. Many of these patients were also suffering from sciatica. Overall, patients experienced a 50% reduction in low-back and leg pain within 16 visits (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1983; 6:117-28).

One case study looked at a patient with sciatica due to spinal disc disease. The article concluded that, in regard to sciatic pain, "there is ample evidence to suggest that a course of conservative care, including spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustment), should be completed before surgical consult is considered." (J manipulative Physicol Ther 1998; 21:288-94)

Investigators pooled data on 576 of low-back pain and/or sciatica. In general, patients attained at least a 50% reduction in symptoms within 19 visits to a doctor of chiropractic (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1984; 7)

Yesterday I was driving, listening to the radio. The person on the radio was sharing a report that said that millennials (age 18-34) are not spending money on unnecessary things like massage and a list of other things. I know I massage lots of college students, people just starting in the job market, high school students that participate in sports, new parents, all fitting in this age group. They all love getting massages and see the many, many benefits. I then decided to go to my friend GOOGLE and see what info I could find on this subject.

The following are bits of info taken from some of the articles I found. The first one is about a young women that has MS.

While most people in their 20s and 30s do not share Rich's mistrust of medical science, many are embracing CAM, an expansive label that today includes everything from massage, meditation, acupuncture and yoga, to herbal, nutritional and plant-based supplements and homeopathic remedies.

By David Koeppel, The Fiscal Times , July 14, 2014

A research report put out by JWT Intelligence in 2012 that surveyed 1,016 millennials showed that 81 percent of them valued experience over material items, with a full 72 percent indicating they'd rather spend their money on a meaningful experience. The report featured data collected from participants in the United States and the United Kingdom.

From 2011 to 2015, revenue from alternative/complementary healthcare providers, which includes massage therapists, increased 14 percent, and employment increased 19 percent. Revenue growth is projected to continue at an average rate of 3.6 percent per year through 2020.3

We are here for you

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sandra's Spin on Things

I hope your holiday season was fabulous. Now with the new year upon us, I have decided to make a few commitments instead resolutions (which some people say are made to be broken). I have decided to make appointments on my calendar weekly for the times I will be going to my Pilates Classes. This is making a commitment to myself to make my exercising a priority. Each week I have another chance to recommit to my exercise program. So there is no reason to beat yourself up. You, too, can recommit to your health and wellness. We have appointments available on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday so that you can have a consultation with Dr. Kindred, restart getting your adjustments and start getting regular massages. Also, we are the member business client of the month at the Landings Credit Union at 2800 S. Mill Ave, Tempe. Stop by and see our display. Monday, January 16 is the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Remember as Dr. King said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Dr. Kindred's Korner

Your feet are your foundation. Most patients who come into the office with low back problems have moderate to severe pronation in either one or both feet. Pronation is when your arches fall inward. When this happens your knees are pulled inward and it has been referred to as knocked knees. I can scan your feet to see if that is part of the your problem. Most people think they have one arch in each foot, but there are three arches per foot. Untreated pronation and imbalances can cause and may eventually lead to chronic problems throughout your body. Proper care along with individually designed stabilizing orthotics can help to correct and align your body. Call 480.968.7984 for your free scan, Footlevelers are having special prices celebrating being in business for 65 years. Take advantages of these savings that can help your health and wallet. Specials expire January 31, 2017.

Martha's Massage Moments

The therapeutic massage you will receive here is customized to meet the needs of your muscles. You can receive a light or deep tissue massage. We are experienced in Deep tissue, Trigger point work and pre-natal massage. These are just a few of the modalities that are available. We can focus on problem areas or we can give you a full body massage. We provide massage for people of all ages.

We do not consider massage to be a luxury; we consider it very beneficial to your body. Combine massage with chiropractic adjustment and you have a winning combination. Regular visits are an investment in your health.

A very beneficial and necessary part of your wellness plan.

To help you with your wellness plan, we have put together a membership program; we call it the Rub Club. When you join the Rub Club you get massages at discounted rates. We have different levels of membership. One that is perfect for you.

If you've never had a massage, let us show you what you've been missing. We have a great introductory rate, call for an appointment, you will be glad you did.

More and more studies are being done to prove the healing effects of massage. These links show some of the studies that have been done. nih.gov

Cause=VS?? The cause of your ailments is a vertebral subluxation. Please speak English you say. Simply stated a vertebral subluxation is when the vertebra (spinal bone) moves out of position and interferes with the normal transmission of nerve supply from the brain cells to the tissue cells. The vertebral subluxation can be caused by poor posture, poor sleep habits, an automobile accident, slips and falls. Even a minor automobile accident can have major ill effects on your health. It may be weeks, month or even years before the problem shows itself. By then, it may be too late to prevent your greatest loss, Youlr Health. Call the office for a consultation, at no charge to you. You tell me how you are feeling and what problems your are experiencing and I will tell you what I think would be the best course of action. Your family needs to be checked because subluxations are passed from generation to generation. If you have a FSA or Health Saving Account, you can use it for treatment in our office and massages are covered also. Of course, we will verify that you plan covers our services. Don't wait until January 1 to take care of your health. Remember what the airlines says, "Use the mask first, then help someone else."

Most people think that stretching is just something you do prior to working out. Did you know that muscle injuries are more prevalent now then years ago? It's because we are more sedentary. So we don't need to stretch just because we are engaged in sports or working out at the gym. We need to stretch when we are inactive also. Sitting can put your muscles in a stressed state but massage helps to undo damage done by an inactive life style. The primary role of stretching during a session is to relax the muscles and improve circulation, which leads to improved flexibility and quicker recovery from physical stresses. Massage gets the blood flowing to your overactive or under active muscles that have contracted because of stress or immobility. Without a good massage, these muscles can spasm and shut down. Then when you go to your massage session they show up as the grape size knots that your massage therapist spends extra time on, and you are thinking OMG! So, stop setting at your desk, on your computer, without taking stretch breaks and book that massage you've been thinking about getting. The one you definitely need.

Hurry get your gift list taken care of easily by getting 3 one hour massages for family or friends and get 1/2 free for you. Call Sandra to place your order. If you get a gift for someone that has not been in before, the gift certificate $24 and if they have been in before it is $40. Between you and me, you could even use one the gift certificates for yourself. We look forward to hearing from you soon, remember only 19 days until Christmas. Remember they make great gifts for people who don't celebrate Christmas.

We are Grateful for you

"We must train from the inside out. Using our strengths to attack and nullify any weaknesses. It's not about denying a weakness may exist but about denying its right to persist." - Vince McConnell

It is said that if you have trouble sleeping, counting your blessings is a good way to go to sleep. How would it work, if we counted our blessings and thought about what we were grateful for the first thing in the morning. I will try that I am grateful that I was given another day on this earth and that I can help someone by doing something that would brighten their day. I am grateful to be part of this wonderful profession of chiropractic that improves the lives of so many people. I am grateful for my wonderful family. One of the things that really brighten my day is our wonderful patients that ask how we are doing and inquire about our activities. So even though we look forward to having time off with our family and friends, we look forward to see you after we get back. Happy Turkey Day, plan a walk to make room for dessert. lol.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

I have been in chiropractic for several decades starting as a patient with back problems that I was told would need surgery or I would be in a wheelchair. I chose chiropractic and I just returned from the World Championships in Powerlifting. I even won. I have seen all kinds of conditions such as sciatica, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. All that is due to the nervous system not working properly. The upper cervical area, C1, C2, C3 have to do with headaches and, eye problems. C4, C5, C6 & C7 imbalances cause stiff neck, and pain down the arm. T1, T2, T3, T4 works with heart and lungs function. T5, T6, T7, T8 imbalances cause stomach problems. T9, T10, T11, regulate the kidneys, gall bladder and adrenal glands. T12 imbalances affect the colon and L1, L2, L3, L4 7 L5 regulate the male and female organs. God made this body to function in an organized manner. It malfunctions when there is interference. In Chiropractic it is known as a subluxation. A subluxation is a vertebra out of position pinching the nerves which diminishes the normal nerve transmission. When you get adjusted the vertebra moves back into position so the nervous system can work properly. We offer consultation at no charge to see how chiropractic can help you. Call now appointment. Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy your time with family and friends. If you don't have family or friends nearby, meet someone and start a new tradition!!

Martha's Massage Moments

People often ask me how often they should get a massage and how long their massage should be. This is a very hard question to answer because there are lots of things to consider. How active are you? How physically active are you at work? Do you drive much? Do you stand for long lengths of time? Do you sit at a computer? How much stress do you have? How well does your body respond to massage? How many problem areas do you have? These questions are just some of the things to consider.

When you choose the length of massage that you need, consider how many tight areas (problem areas) you have. If you are getting an hour massage and you have 3 or 4 tight areas your massage therapist is not going to be able to give each area the time it needs to work out most of the tightness. If you only have half an hour the massage therapist will only be able to work 1 maybe 2, if the areas respond well to the massage. It is unusual for one massage to make all the tightness go away.

There is no reason why you cannot get a massage every day if you wish to. Starting out with two 1 hour massages a month is a very good place to begin. If you are not seeing the progress with two a month you can always increase the number. If you show progress with the two a month you can stay there or eventually decrease the amount of massages. Just remember that one a month is better than NONE a month. If you have not heard about of RUB CLUB please ask us about it. You can get massages at a discounted rate.

This quote embodies what our Service Men and Women are. We always say thank you for your service; however, lets do a little more. What about taking the time to talk and Listen to a vet. Wouldn't it be nice for them to tell you about their experiences.

We would like to hear from you about someone who needs are services. Who knows maybe it might be a vet. Remember we will be closed on Monday, November 14. We will be at the Worlds Championship of Powerlifting where Dr. Kindred will be competing to bring home more records and hardware. We will reopen on Wednesday, November 16.

My dad was a Marine and I still can see him on Veterans Day getting ready in his dress blues and heading to the local parade. My dad proudly served and some of his best friends are the ones he met in the service. I know many of you have family members that proudly served also. Some of their health isn't as great as it could be. Wouldn't it be great if they had a consultation at no charge to see how chiropractic could help them? We are willing and ready to help your vets, family, friends and coworkers.

Martha's Massage Moments

I have been honored to massage many veterans. It is great to see their improvement. Next week I will have a surprise and show you another way to honor those who helped us stay safe and sound. Remember massage is both relaxing and therapeutic.

We have the treats

"Quit talking and start doing." - Walt Disney

With the election coming soon Transparency means operating in such a way so that people can clearly see what actions are performed. Last week a man that came over a year ago for a massage, saw our offer of $24 for new people and thought he should be eligible also. The special is for first time massages and there is only ONE per person. We want you to have the treat of the massage, however, there are parameters.

Please vote and vote your conscious so many people worked so hard for us to have the vote. As you know at first only landowning men could vote. African American men were given the right to vote in 1870 with the passing of the 15 Amendment during the Reconstruction era. Women got the right to vote in August 18, 1920 when 19th Amendment was ratified and some African American women could not vote in several of the Southern States until the 1960s. Add to that Poll tax and literacy tests that everyone didn't need to pay or take. Can you say Voter Suppression? Well all this history lesson has made me need an adjustment and massage. Read the others' column for more treats.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

We are hearing so much about concussions, pulled hamstrings, sprained ankles. Even though those are sport injuries, several times on Mondays people come in all kinds of ailments after the weekend. We do too many things from the honey do list, we have a race without proper training and stretching. Even though these things are done to enrich our lives. These same things can take away from our well being. Come in to get checked. Subluxations, bones out of place putting pressure on nerves, can be the start of even bigger problems. You would be surprise the people who think they did a little something over the weekend and let it go unchecked and then bent over to pick up a napkin and couldn't straighten back up. We are here with adjustments and massages to help you to optimal health. Call for an appointment, you and your family will be glad you did.

The Gift that More People Want
October 24, 2016

Sandra's Spin on Things

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to just try one more time. "
- Thomas Edison

Follow your hunches or instinct. This weekend we went up to Dewey for the day. We had thought maybe it would be nice to spend the night and come home early Sunday afternoon. Then we just didn't think we wanted to stay and maybe it would be best just to get home before dark. We played with the idea and finally decided to come home on Saturday. Sunday while listening to the news (which we seldom do) we heard that a truck that had a big load couldn't stop and plowed into a car starting a chain reaction of 24 cars in the collision and they didn't know when the freeway would clear and traffic would start up again. Yes, it was the same road we would have been on and just leave it at that. So when you feel that first little nagging pain, act on it before it gets out of control. You don't want to be stuck in a situation that causes you a lot of pain and inconvenience. Just remember that we are here for you and call us if you have an emergency. Better yet, call now for a consultation that is free of charge if you have symptoms that are causing you dis-ease.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

You only have to watch TV for a few seconds and there is a drug commercial promoting itself as the magic pill that will cure what ails you. Sure sometimes people need drugs for certain things, but wouldn't if be better to take preventative measures that will keep you healthy. We all know that chiropractic helps your body to produce all it needs to be healthy after the subluxations are removed. We are becoming more aware that our food is just not giving us all the nutrients we need. How do you know what vitamins to take? First of all we have a great supplement call Daily Complete that is excellent in providing more of the nutrients you need. Check out this short video and call us afterwards and we can help you get Daily Complete puretrimcomplete.com.

"It's a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it."
- W. Somerset Maugham

I was reading about a young man whose father was a KKK grand wizard and that he had been groomed to take over his dad's position at some point. He went to a small college and became friendly with the only Orthodox Jew at the school. This classmate engaged in several conversations and as a friendship formed the classmate took his friend home for Friday night Shabbat dinners. I marvel at how as the article called it Life after Hate made for a real transformation. In our own life when we take care of ourselves by getting adjusted and massages we can take the time to meet someone different and make the world better because we enrich our lives by meeting someone who has different perspective from you. This week let's do 3 random acts of kindness. Observe how much better both of you feel. One could be a massage to get you in the right frame of mind.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

We have all heard the phrase putting your best foot forward. This is from the time when people got all dressed up and finished it up with the finest shoes. Today, we exercise, run, walk and just stand on our feet a lot. People with back problems need to stabilize their spine as they receive adjustments and continue with that support whenever they are on their feet. We are offering you a scan of your feet and report showing how orthotics can help stabilize your spine. Also, if orthotics are right for you we will offer them to you for a savings of $50 off the regular price. Make an appointment for the scan today as this offer ends October 31, 2016.

"Patience, persistence & perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success." - Napoleon Hill

As the season of change is upon us, it makes me think about what I can do to change for the better. Better health, better relationships and most of a better me by taking responsibility for my health and well being. I found the following piece from which I can draw inspiration.

I Choose...
to live by choice, not by chance
to make changes, not excuses
to be motivated, not manipulated;
to be useful, not used;
to excel, not compete
I choose self-esteem, not self pity.
I choose to listen to my inner voice,
Not the random opinion of others.
You have a choice

Below is a quick "quiz." You may be surprised by some of the answers.

Did you know?
Chronic low back pain is the most rapidly growing cause of disability with a 168% increase over the past ten years?

Did you know?
At least 75 million people are currently suffering from chronic spinal pain. 5 million of these people are partially disabled and 2 million are completely disabled!

Did you know?
Only 10% of your nerves can feel pain, the other 90% control the function of your body!

Did you know?
The very first adjustment, given in 1895 by Dr. D. D. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa was to restores hearing in a deaf man, Harvey Lillard.

Remember Thomas A. Edison said, "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."

There is no charge for a consultation where you tell me what going on with you. I will tell you how I can help and if I can't help I will tell you that also. Please call for a consultation and see what changes are in store for you.

I would like to thank all of my clients for all the referrals they have given me. You have sent in your friends and family with their aches and pains and they have found relief. You have purchased your friends and family gift certificates for massage and they have enjoyed the experience.

This week I massaged a gentleman that came in because someone had purchased a gift certificate for his wife and she couldn't come in, so he said he would use it. One of the problem areas he had was his knees. So, I worked his knees and legs. When he got off the massage table he was able to squat down, pain free. He was so happy he said I'll be back and I'm going to tell my wife she's got to come in.

Sending people to me is what I consider the GREATEST compliment. So again I want to thank ALL of you for your referrals and for allowing me to be a part of your health care.

I love my job,
Martha

Quote: "To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe."
- Anatole France

Sandra's Spin on Things

I am back from visiting Boston. Yes, I had my first lobster roll and some authentic Boston Cream Pie, but I walked a bunch while I was gone. We talk about moderation all the time, but what does that really mean. Eat less, work out more or be more conscious about what we are doing. Are we getting adjusted regularly? It isn't about us telling you that you need adjustments, it is about the quality of life you want. Do you want to be bent over in pain, with knees, arms, elbows radiating pain constantly. Do you want people to automatically offer to help, because they think you are older?

I for one want to be able to walk and keep up the pace. I don't want to talk about "normal" aches and pain. How do I avoid these conversations. I get regular adjustments, massages, workout and play tennis. What do you want to do that you feel you can no longer do? Let us help not only you, but your family and friends. The weather is cooling down and we all want to enjoy the AZ we moved here to enjoy. Our leaves may not turn, but it is time to play. Remember there is no charge for a consultation and we have a special price for your first introductory massage. Call and I will give you a great appointment time that will work for you.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

I had the pleasure to adjust a newborn baby days after she was born. This made me remember why I became a chiropractor in the first place. I only had to use 2 fingers and gently adjust her neck to release the first subluxation (bone out a place, putting pressure on the nerves). Birth is traumatic to the baby as they pull the neck as they work to get the shoulders through the birth canal. The smile on the baby's face and later being told the baby slept better and was crying less, really makes my day. When we have no interference our body works as it should, pain free and we are able perform simple tasks without difficulty. This is how things should work, but we have trauma such as falls, tripping over objects and car accidents. Remember if it damaged your vehicle, it damaged and hurt you. You are more fragile than you car and sometimes you don't feel the ill effects until days after the collision. Come in and get checked and we can suggest what is needed.

We still want to help people to health though Chiropractic and Massage

Sandra Spin's on Things

"In life, you have 3 choices. Give up, give in, or give it your all."
- Charleston Parker

We have been at our new location for 10 months and this is the anniversary month of Dr. Kindred starting in practice. We have traveled down Mill from across from Tempe High School, to next to HiHealth, to next to the Red Devil Italian Restaurant, and to here. We have gone from our own private practice to sharing space. Why! you may ask? Sometime you need to do things differently in order to reach your goals. Now that we are here we are ready to get down to the business of helping people obtain and maintain optimal health though chiropractic and massage. Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday we still have appointments available for your family, friends and those whose you want to be your friend. So all I can say is Thank You in advance for your referrals. For anyone that didn't make the trek with us to this location, Remember you can always come home again.

We are doing some exciting things. We have a new sign in system that sends you a love note and we hopeful you respond.

Last but not least we are changing credit card processors. Our credit union's merchant coordinator has a program we just had to take advantage of and we are excited with its program. More about this later.

Hope you have been enjoying the Olympic Games. Go USA.

Get to the Root of the Problem.

One of the biggest hazards of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) is that they usually only suppress pain and inflammation without addressing the fundamental problem. They "mask" your pain temporarily, forcing you to continue taking them and living with their potential side effects. Escape this vicious cycle by visiting me. In contrast to NSAIDs, chiropractors, "unmask" your pain, they concentrate on the causes of health issues, not the symptoms.

Specifically, chiropractors work to eliminate spinal problems called vertebral subluxations. These dysfunctional areas in the spine result from restrictions in motion or bones (vertebrae) that are out of alignment. Vertebral subluxations have been linked with a myriad of conditions, including back and neck and headaches. I use safe gentle and effective maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments to restore motion to the spine and remove vertebral subluxations.

But how does chiropractic compare to NSAIDs in term of pain relief? One study, which compare chiropractic to NSAIDs concluded that "There is no evidence that NSAID use is any more effective than cervical manipulation (chiropractic adjustment) for neck pain" (Journal of Manipulative & Physiologic Therapeutics 1996;18:530-6)

Massage is my passion and purpose. This is a little story that proves it to me.

Last night I was with my youngest grandson. His sister had put something in his dinosaur mouth that he did not want there. He was getting upset with her. I said hand it to me, I got an ink pen and flicked it out, then handed it back to him. He looked at it, then at me and said, "Mimi your a Super Hero". How cute was that? When it comes to muscle tension and pain come see me. Let me be your muscle Super Hero.

Back to School Already:

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe." - Anatole France

I marveled as a saw a young neighbor boy walk to the bus stop and I marveled how he had grown over the summer. The only way I knew it was the first day of school was seeing him and the bus stopping to pick up the children in the neighborhood. As we plan for the new school year, league play or the last trip before fall, we should stop and realize that things will be much more enjoyable if we feel fine and our spine is in line. We always have room for one more person to get a complimentary consultation where you tell the doctor your problem and he will tell you how he can help and the fee. You have spent so much time looking out for our children, friends and parents that we might forget to schedule a check up for ourselves. Now is the time to do something for yourself. You could call or just press the schedule now. Just do it now, you are worth it!!

Dr. Kindred's Korner

This week you have noticed that we are coming more into the tech world. We now have an electronic sign in sheet. Some of you say Yay and others are saying why. This is another way to get the word out. You sign in and then what Sandra calls a 'love note' is sent asking to tell us how your experience has been with us. This in turn goes out to Yelp, our business Facebook page, Google and more people can get a Personal "Referral" from you even though it may not be face to face. When I came to town I was the 7th chiropractor in town and it was easy for everyone to know me. Now there are 80 in Tempe alone. My goal now as much as ever is to help as many people as I can to optimal health through chiropractic. I love what I do and feel that my purpose is to free the world of subluxations one spine at a time. Let's start now, school is in session.

Oh we looooove change

Sandra's Spin on Things

What did we do before computers? That can be said in delight when we get a new app that tells when to drink water or allows our patients to schedule their appointments at home when they have their calendar in front of them. What did we do before computers? Can be said with concern when something new is started that promises to make record keeping easier.

We hope that we will say that in delight because we are starting a new program. It serves two purposes it is a sign in sheet and it allows you to take a few minutes to write a review. Since you can only tell so many people about us and the wonderful care you are receiving, this program will add comments to Dr. Kindred's Business Facebook page (after we dust it off), yelp and Google. I wish I could really explain how this works, but it is suppose to put our name out there so we can help more people. Please work with us on our new endeavor which will start Monday afternoon on July 25, 2016.

We will have another surprise coming later this week. Stay tuned. Thank you for support and making our days brighter because you were hear. Dr. K's Korner and Martha's Massage Moment will be back next week.

Quote: "Patience, persistence & perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success." - Napoleon Hill

What does thriving mean to you? Health, Wealth & Happiness? I think at different stages of our lives, thriving might take on different meanings. Optimal health is what we want for each of you. We help by removing subluxations which are bones out of place putting pressure on the nerves. Then you add nutrition and exercise and you are on the way to thriving. Be sure to ask Dr. Kindred any questions that can help you so that you can THRIVE!

We have appointment times available for you, your family & friends. We appreciate you referring to us, that is what helps us thrive.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

There is a saying by Virginia Satir, a respected family therapist, "We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth." Aug 10, 2012.

Research shows a proper deep hug, where the hearts are pressing together, can benefit you in these ways:

1. The nurturing touch of a hug builds trust and a sense of safety. This helps with open and honest communication.
2. Hugs can instantly boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger.
3. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts one's serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.
4. Hugs strengthen the immune system. The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the Solar Plexus Chakra. This stimulates the thymus gland, which regulates and balances the body's production of white blood cells, which keep you healthy and disease free.
5. Hugging boosts self-esteem. From the time we're born our family's touch shows us that we're loved and special. The associations of self-worth and tactile sensations from our early years are still imbedded in our nervous system as adults. The cuddles we received from our Mom and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of that. Hugs, therefore, connect us to our ability to self love.
6. Hugging relaxes muscles. Hugs release tension in the body. Hugs can take away pain; they soothe aches by increasing circulation into the soft tissues.
7. Hugs balance out the nervous system. The galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. The effect in moisture and electricity in the skin suggests a more balanced state in the nervous system - parasympathetic.
8. Hugs teach us how to give and receive. There is equal value in receiving and being receptive to warmth, as to giving and sharing. Hugs educate us how love flows both ways.
9. Hugs are so much like meditation and laughter. They teach us to let go and be present in the moment. They encourage us to flow with the energy of life. Hugs get you out of your circular thinking patterns and connect you with your heart and your feelings and your breath.
10. The energy exchange between the people hugging is an investment in the relationship. It encourages empathy and understanding. And, it's synergistic, which means the whole is more than the sum of its parts: 1 1 = 3 or more! This synergy is more likely to result in win-win outcomes.
- reprinted from Marcus Julian Felicetti, August 10, 2012

According to the American Rhinologic Society, sinusitis is the most common chronic illness in America with over-the-counter and prescription drugs for relieving their sinus discomfort. However, sufferers may not realize that a massage therapist could potentially be their greatest ally in their battle against sinusitis.

Take a Moment to Reflect on this day
May 30, 2016

Sandra's Spin on Things

QUOTE: "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." - unknown

First of all let me say it is good to be back with you. As I think of back on why we celebrate I want to reflect on all the dedicated people that went to battle for us, so we could be free. The men and women in the military left there homes, and the safety of their daily lives for us. It is not enough to say, "Thank you for your service." We need to think of ways to personally honor them in a big or small way. We could donate items of toiletries so that they have enough supplies while out on their missions. We could go to veterans' group homes and just visit with them. We could be advocates and let the congress and senate know we want our veterans to have the healthcare and other services needed upon returning. So while at the BBQs and cookouts with family friends challenge each to do SOMETHING for the veterans that did so much for us.

Dr. Kindred's Korner
Your Spine is Your Lifeline—Structure Affects Function

The adult spinal column consists of 24 freely-movable bone segments called vertebrae. Between each segment is a soft cushion called a disc, which serves as a shock absorber and ball bearing. Inside spine is a tube which contains the spinal cord, the "lifeline" of the nervous system. Emitting from between the vertebrae are the nerves which coordinate, control and regulate bodily functions.

If one or more these spinal nerves becomes irritated, symptoms of pain and other discomfort can occur, as well as vital organs affected. The spine is a semi-flexible column consisting of 33 segments, 150 joints and almost 1,000 ligamentary connections. About, adjacent and overlapping the 24 vertebrae are 5 layers of muscles. These muscles (over 240) attach directly to the spinal column like guy wires, with over a million possible pulls. It is readily evident that any localized imbalance of these muscles can stress the spinal vertebrae and may adversely affect nerve control.

I was told that the injury I had could only be corrected by surgery, and if I didn't have surgery I would be in a wheelchair. I decided to try chiropractic and have never been wheelchair bound. I truly believe in chiropractic because I have seen how it works over and over again. I know everyone can benefit from chiropractic. Our son was adjusted at 3 days old to make sure the trauma from birth didn't cause neck problems from being pulled out of the birth canal by his head. Our daughter was adjusted at 12 hours old to assure she didn't start life with any problems, also.

I believe everyone could benefit from chiropractic, therefore I am offering a consultation and feet scan at my expense. Even if your feet don't hurt, they can cause stress and pain throughout the body. Problems with the feet can wreak havoc on the kinetic chain and may lead to ankle, knee, hip and low back pain among other issues.

Quote: "It's a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it."
W. Somerset Maugham

Everyday I hear people say, the weather is so great, this is why we live here. This makes me think of how it is so important to live in the moment. We see older people lamenting about "the good old days" and how things aren't as good as they use to be. The younger people are looking forward to the future. Why don't we think about the beauty of this moment. We woke us, we have love ones that care about us, the weather is beautiful. Take a moment to look within, give thanks and think what one thing will I do today to fulfill my purpose in life. You can then enjoy the present of today.

Dr. Kindred's Korner
Grumpy Guts

Digestive problems are widespread among people in today's fast paced, fast food society. Particularly rampant are intestinal conditions triggered by emotional stress, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Although drugs are often prescribed for IBS, scientific studies do not clearly indicate their use. What's more, many of these medications have hazardous side effects. That's why I encourage patients consider chiropractic before turning to medication.

An estimated one in five adults about 75% of whom are women, suffer from IBS at some point in their lives. Symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, excessive gas, bloating, mucous in the stools, nausea and headache. Pain is often set off by eating, and may be associated with specific foods such as wheat, dairy, caffeine and citrus fruits. Emotional stress is also a significant factor triggering the disorder—along with diet and medication.

The exact causes are not know, but scientists believe that nervous system interference to the digestive tract lies at the root of the disorder. Chiropractors have long observed that patients with IBS are likely to suffer from low back pain (Gut 1986;27:27-40) Scientist in Denmark speculate that the line link lies in the nervous system, because nerves that supply the intestines emerge from the spinal cord and pass between vertebrae. If the spine is out of alignment the messages these nerves transmit may be affected.

Researchers compared 28 healthy control subjects with 39 people suffering from upper abdominal pain (51% of whom had symptoms of IBS) 72% of the patient reported back pain, compared with 17 % of the control participants. Physical examinations in 75% of patients revealed spinal abnormalities (Scand J Gastroenterol 1990;25;1235-41). Patients often report that chiropractic care subdues their digestive problems including IBS. If you are having these problems, let me know and I can adjust the areas associated with IBS.

Martha's Massage Moments
Massage and IBS

Fortunately, there are many ways to treat IBS. Many patients learn to manage the problems with lifestyle choices that can help to keep IBS under control. These include paying attention to diet, using massage and other alternative treatments, and stress reduction techniques.

In irritable bowel syndrome, the muscles that line the walls of the intestine contract stronger than in a healthy person, and food passes through the colon faster. This then causes diarrhea or gas. Sometimes food passes through too slowly and constipation follows. IBS patients often react to certain foods differently from a healthy person and some foods may trigger symptoms or make existing symptoms worse.

Other lifestyle issues that affect IBS patients include stress and anxiety. Alternative treatments that can be used to relieve the symptoms include massage. Specific massage movements and massage on pressure points can be used to stimulate sluggish digestion in case of constipation, to relax abdominal muscles or to relieve bloating. Massage on acupressure points can also help to stimulate the colon.

Some studies have shown that regular abdominal massage reduced gastrointestinal symptoms with regard to constipation and abdominal pain, and resulted in an increased number of bowel movements, although it may take up to two weeks to begin seeing the increase pacificcollege.edu

Let's spend some extra time in that region at your next massage. In the next few days we will let you know a great way to give your Mom and those who mother (nurture) you an Awesome Mother's Day gift!!

Dr. K's Korner
Avoid Aches and Pains

H20 is an essential cellular building block of joint-cushioning connective tissue. Throughout the body, joints that lack hydration are prone to injury and arthritis. In the back, dehydration may stress muscles and joints, triggering a spinal condition known as vertebral subluxation. Restricted movement in the spine characterizes this common disorder, which is associated with backache as well as many others conditions. It may also involve a misalignment of the bones of the spine (vertebrae). I correct vertebral subluxations with gentle and effective adjustments, which have been shown to effectively ward off vertebral subluxations and the disorders associated with them.

How much water is enough? The standard response is six to eight eight ounce glasses per day. However, there's a new, more exact standard emerging. Start with your body weight, divide that number in half, and the answer represents the minimum number of ounces you should drink each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need a minimum of 75 ounces of water per day.

The doctor of chiropractic works with the nerves—both directly and indirectly—because every function of your entire body is controlled or affected by the nervous system. Every organ, tissue and cell is affected by nerve impulses traveling from the brain to every part of your body.

NERVES:

* make possible all physical movement as they transmit nerve stimulation to all muscles, bones, and joints.
* transmit all sensations to the brain.
* make possible all sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.
* maintain your balance and keep your body at a normal 98.6 degrees.
* make it possible to swallow.
* make your bowels move.
* control your liver, lungs, heart, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder and kidneys.
* control the circulation of blood.

In fact, as you can see, your nervous system is the master control of all other body systems—
glandular
reproductive
digestive
eliminative
respiratory
circulatory

Complete, perfect, natural health comes only when you have a complete, perfect, natural, normally-functioning nervous system. Call now for a consultation and foot span, your body will thank you.

Pain can be the last thing you notice when things are not functioning correctly and the first thing that leaves after getting adjustment. But there is more to deal with, and Dr. Kindred and Martha will tell you the rest of the story.

I know that I have been enjoying the weather. This is my kind of winter. Take some time to walk and talk with a friend or love one and enjoy this gorgeous weather. Due to popular demand we are extending our Love Special Massage buy 2 one hour massages for only $70 (a $120 value). We want to thank all of you that are referring your family and friends or someone you want to be friend to us for chiropractic care and massage. We really appreciate the faith you have in us and please continue to send anyone that you think can use our services.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

Our main objective is to stabilize and reduce your condition in an attempt to give you relief from pain or other discomfort you might be having. Sometimes relief is possible with the first chiropractic adjustment, but this is the exception. Chiropractic's clinical experience indicates that many of the patients we are able to accept get relief within the first few visits, while the remaining patients require a longer period of time due to the nature, severity and duration of their conditions.

Some patients mistake temporary relief from pain as an indicator that their condition is corrected, and discontinue chiropractic care when they begin to feel better. Keep in mind that in order to get the maximum benefit from your chiropractic care, you must allow enough time for the complete stabilization and/or reduction of the causes of your condition possible, and permit the weakened parts of the body to strengthen and adjust. The original condition may return and perhaps be more severe than before, or other conditions may develop, if you don't allow enough time. Call for a complimentary consultation to see if how we can help you.

Martha's Massage Moment

If you have pain, we have the answer.

Those of us who get massage on a regular basis have experienced how we will feel less pain after receiving a massage. The following are bits of information I have found regarding pain and massage.

People with chronic pain often turn to massage therapy to help naturally improve their quality of life. Notes Tiffany Field, Ph.D., director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Florida:
Most people go to massage therapists to reduce pain. There's a release of serotonin, which is the body's natural production of anti-pain chemicals. Additionally, an aggravating factor in pain syndromes can be a lack of deep, restorative sleep. Massage is very effective at increasing deep sleep. With more deep sleep, you have less pain.

In the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals: The Official Handbook, updated in August 2000, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) suggests massage as a non-pharmacological therapy that can be used successfully in pain management. So if you are in pain schedule a massage and adjustment it will get you on the road to living pain free.

Who do you think will win the Super Bowl on Sunday? The Cardinals had a great run, maybe this was a start to another run? Our health is the same way. Some of us have a time of good health and then something happens and we can get off track. The truth is we can always improve our health. Maintaining our health with improved habits, eating well and getting regular adjustments and massages keeps you on the winning track.

Since this is Love month, we would like to show love and appreciation to all our loyal patients, massage clients, friends and soon to be friends by extending a Valentine Special of 2 one hour massages for $70. You can mix and match them anyway you wish. The massages must be purchased by February 29, 2016 and redeemed by April 15, 2016. I am sure this is better than dinner and a movie.

We have affordable plans so you can enjoy both.

Martha's Massage Moment

Why do Chiropractic Care and Massage work so well together?

Patients who combine massage therapy and chiropractic care together get better, faster, and get longer lasting results. The reason for this is their pain often includes soft tissue (muscle) and subluxations (spine). Together, massage and adjustments, address the issues of pain and loss of flexibility.

When you receive a massage prior to an adjustment it can loosen the tight muscle that may interfere with the adjustment. When the muscles are loose, the chiropractor can access the problem area better, resulting in a better and longer lasting adjustment.

When you receive both massage and adjustment you are getting a power packed treatment. The results will be a better quality of life, by INCREASED PAIN RELIEF AND INCREASED FLEXABILITY. Book your massage and adjustment today.

Last time we talked about the four things chiropractic helped with. Reduction of pain, Recovery of function , Rehabilitation and Reinforcement. This week we will talk about Stabilizing Orthotics.

How would Stabilizing Orthotics help my back? My feet don't hurt! I hear this questions all the time. Your feet are the foundation of your body, and if your feet are not properly supported, you can have problems anywhere from your ankles on up through you neck. Stabilizing Orthotics provide a balanced foundation to keep your body stable as you stand, walk, or run. It's like putting a shim under the leg of a wobbly table. The shim stops the entire table from moving. Stabilizing Orthotics keep your entire body in balance and that can help relieve your back pain. Depending on a variety of factors (lifestyle, health, age, weight and gender), your healthcare professional will select the style of Stabilizing Orthotics that is best suited for you. Ask me for information about Stabilizing Orthotics.

What kind of exercise should I be doing?

Your healthcare professional can be determine what rehabilitative exercise would be suitable for your condition. The goal of low back exercise therapy is to ultimately restore as much function and range of movement without pain as possible. One method available is the BACKSYS Home Care Back System. BACKSYS is easy to use in the privacy of your home, sets up in seconds, and help you regain low back strength and movement without pain.

I can give a scan to see if you need orthotics, in 10 minutes we can see where you stand.

Martha's Massage Moment
Feet and Massage

Our feet are not a body part that we think about often. Until they start hurting. If we walk they hurt, if we stand they hurt, then we notice that we hurt all over.

If you think about it our feet are under a lot of stress. They carry the weight of our body. If our body has an imbalance it is going to affect our feet. It is very important to keep your feet healthy. Massage can help you have healthy feet. Massaging not only the feet but the calf muscle along with stretching and strengthening the muscles will help you to improve the health of your feet. Book a massage today. Let your massage therapist know you'd like her to focus on your feet. You should notice a difference in just a few sessions.

Sandra's Spin on Things

"We must learn to live together as brothers [& sisters] or perish together as fools."
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We often are asking what can I do? Something as small as the reminder I am passing on to you can be a start, even if only a few people benefit from this message it is worth it. Do you believe seniors should have a choice in healthcare? The national Medicare Equality Petition will raise awareness of how the current Medicare system shortchanges seniors who want and need the essential services provided by Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) to stay healthy, pain-free and mobile.

ACA encourages DC's across the nation to ask their patients and other supporters to sign the petition (link below) and add their name to a growing list of Americans who want rightful access to services provided by DCs for themselves and their loved ones who are Medicare patients.

The goal is to create a voice too loud for Congress to ignore. The time for Medicare equality is now. Will you help make it happen? Sign today: www.acatoday.org/equality

We also help seniors, juniors and folks of all ages stay healthy, pain-free and mobile. Call for a consultation to see how chiropractic and massage can help you.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

People often ask why am I having low back pain? Who do I go to for help? About 70% of low back pain is caused by spinal sprain and postural fatigue. Lifting a heavy object improperly, or falling can cause immediate back pain. A chiropractor can determine from a thorough examination who and how you can best be helped. Success depends on a four stage treatment plan.

Stage 1: Reduction of pain. In the office pain relieving treatments, ice/moist heat therapy etc. and at home ice/moist heat applications, bed rest and supports.
Stage 2: Recovery of function. This stage promotes the ability to perform basic daily activities with no increase in pain through recovery of normal muscle tone, joint movement and flexibility and promotion of nerve root healing. In the office care includes spinal and extremity adjustments, with continued therapy and massage. Home care includes low level exercise and resumption of some daily activities.
Stage 3: Rehabilitation. Key Therapeutic approaches often include continued spinal adjustments, expanded exercise, postural retraining, and use of flexible, individually designed stabilizing orthotics.
Stage 4: Reinforcement. Stage 4 is characterized by full recover, normal, unrestricted activities requiring a continuing prevention program and maintenance treatment visits.

Martha's Massage Moments
Specific Area Massage

This type of massage focuses on one or two specific areas or body parts. It is usually an area that has been injured or gets a lot of repetitive use. It may be your low back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, etc. This massage allows the massage therapist to focus the attention directly on that area. In some cases this type of massage is preferable as it allows the specific area to get the attention it needs. This type of massage is very good for that area that feels better after a regular massage, but you always feel it needs a little more work. Once you receive a Specific area massage you will see that by focusing on that area and really working it will bring more flexibility and less tension to the area. When receiving regular massage on the area you will find that your massage therapist will also work the surrounding muscles too. For example if you want your glutes worked the massage therapist will also work the low back, quads and hamstring. This is because all of these muscles effect each other. Usually specific area massages are recommended once a month or once every 2 weeks depending on the area and severity of the problem. So call today to schedule your appointment.

Chiropractic/Massage and Pregnancy
January 10, 2016

Sandra's Spin on Things

"Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it. The meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning."
- Joseph Campbell

We talk about the birth of a new year and now let's explore human pregnancy. This year we are all about loving our present situation, seeing the possibilities, calling it good and looking for the change that improves us.

One thing that can improve our sleep is using a great cervical pillow. We have a great cervical pillow that has four distinct sides. Dr. Kindred muscle tests you to see which side works best for you. They are $58 for one or you can save when you buy 2 for $105.

Dr. Kindred's Korner
Pregnancy and Labor

Back pain during pregnancy is common. A prospective cohort study of 200 consecutive women attending a prenatal clinic were followed throughout their pregnancy. Seventy-six percent reported back pain at some time during their pregnancy. Diakow et al. performed a retrospective study of 400 pregnancies and deliveries of 170 consecutive patients presenting to five outpatient chiropractic clinics. A subset of 170 patients who had painful pregnancies were divided into receiving chiropractic care (i.e. manual adjustments) and those who did not. The group that received spinal adjustments experienced significantly less pain during labor.

Studies on the effectiveness of chiropractic care in patients with back pain during pregnancy and the reduction of pain during delivery are needed. Patients who received chiropractic care during their pregnancy tend to have a shorter period of labor time before delivery. This hypothesis could also be tested. This information is from the Chiropractic Pediatrics. (I have this book at the office, if you wish to read more about it.) Sandra is an example of this study. With Adrian she had an one hour and fifty minute labor from start to finish and seven years later Cheryl decided to come in two and one half hours.

Martha's Massage Moment

Getting a Massage during pregnancy is an excellent complementary choice for prenatal care. If you are looking for a natural way to reduce some of the discomforts while pregnant, you will find it with massage. Not only will you be promoting overall wellness, but you will improve the following areas of pregnancy.

* backaches
* reduce stress
* headaches
* edema (swelling)
* leg cramps
* reduces stress on the weight bearing joints
* encourages blood and lymph circulations
* helps to relax nervous tension—which aids in better sleep
* helps relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

Speaking of hormone changes I recently read an article at http://americanpregnancy.org/ I would like to share with you a couple of paragraphs from it:
Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced to women's prenatal care. This leads to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health. In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (hormones associated with stress) were reduced, and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression).

These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight. The evidence strongly suggests there are maternal and newborn benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care. Getting massages during pregnancy is beneficial to you and your baby.

We wish everyone the Best Holiday Season, be sure to get an adjustment and massage to help you have a stress free holiday.

Dr. Kindred's Korner—WHY DO PATIENTS NEED ORTHOTICS?

Your feet may not hurt, but they can cause stress and pain throughout the body. Problems in the feet can wreck havoc on the kinetic chain, and may lead to ankle, knee, hip and low back pain among other issues. Properly supported feet can relieve pain throughout the kinetic chain. Posture starts from the ground up. Orthotics help maintain the foot 3 arch structure called the plantar vault. The plantar vault optimizes the body by:

1. Giving strength to support the weight of the entire body.
2. Permitting flexibility to accommodate changes in terrain.
3. Providing momentum for movement.

By balancing the kinetic chain with foot levelers orthotics your adjustments can last longer improving your quality of life. Different shoe types require different types of orthotics. Your feet should be equally supported in your work shoes as they are in your running shoes or hiking boots.

Come by and let us scan your feet to determine what orthotics are best for you.

Martha's Massage Moments—FEET AND MASSAGE

You should notice the difference in a just a few sessions.

For Christmas if you buy two 1 hour gift certificates to give away, you can get a 1 hour massage for yourself. Buy two 1 hour gift certificates for $120 and get one for yourself for $30. This is a great gift for 2 people on your list that are hard to get the right gift and will reward you for your efforts.

"It's not happy people who are thankful. It is thankful people who are happy."
- Unknown

We are all getting settled in to our new office. This makes the old saying "less is more" take on more meaning. We are back from Windy Las Vegas. It was great to get away for a few days, and Dr. Kindred brought back the goods from the World Powerlifting Championships. He won 1st place in the Push and Pull (bench press and deadlift) 68-74 age division. The next time you are in the office, I am sure he will show the trophy.

We are thankful for all the great things we have been given, great people on the quest for optimal health. We are humbled that we are included on your journey. We had a former patient that we haven't seen in about 15 years call and want to return back for care. They had seen many doctors in that time and wanted to come to us, see you can always go home again.

Speaking of home, we are going to California where our daughter, Cheryl is making Thanksgiving Dinner. It seems like just yesterday she was a little girl running around Western Reserve Club wanting to jump into the swimming pool. Our son, Adrian is starting his Real Estate Business in Tempe and his daughter, Adrianna is a senior at Corona where the Band & Color Guard just won 3rd in the State Championship and Micah is a Shift Leader at Dunkin Doughnuts and preparing to enter Mesa Community College.

My parting word is this, Thanksgiving take some time to reach out to a family member and say hi and tell them you love them. You really may not have the chance to do it later. Nike got this one right. DO IT NOW. We love you John, Mom, and Ngondo.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

I feel so grateful for all the great patients that have come my way. Each of you have a special place in my heart. Thank you for all the support in all my Power Lifting endeavors. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy your family and friends. See you soon.

6. STRUCTURAL SUPPORT. Get some rest, get some sun, and/or get a massage. Keep your body in alignment with adjustments, stretches, and exercises.
7. ELIMINATE OR DRAMATICALLY REDUCE PROCESSED FATS. Eat enough natural or unprocessed fats but watch your processed fat consumption.
8. ELIMINATE ANIMAL FLESH for 10 days and judge by results.
9. ELIMINATE MILK, CHEESE, AND ALL OTHER DAIRY PRODUCTS (with the rare exception of a condiment).
10. ELIMINATE ACID ADDICTIONS. For 10 days cut out sugar, salt, vinegar, etc.

Just want to take this time to thank all my clients for their participation in the Rub Club. We at Kindred Chiropractic Centre have been growing the Rub Club since July of 2011. "Dr. Kindred excels in all things he does wether it's weight lifting or being a master chiropractor. The first time I met Dr. Kindred I had endured 12 years of pain from a football injury. Not one health professional I saw could give me relief. After one adjustment from Dr. Kindred my pain was gone instantaneously. Right then and there I knew what I was going to do the rest of my life. . . For if I could change one life to the degree he just changed mine, I would spend the rest of my life to pay that back, and to my great fortune, as a doctor of chiropractic I get to do this every single day! Xrays Who Own Them

When most patients come they are examined and xrays, although some patients have previously been treated by various other doctors. One question that comes up from time to time is who owns these xrays. The Arizona Board of Chiropractic Examiners has determined that patient records custody are as follows:

Interpretive materials including xray taken during the course of chiropractic treatment is the work by-product of the physician and is his/her property.

Failure to disclose such information to the patient or his/her authorized agent is considered by the Board to be unprofessional conduct likely to deceive the public

The doctor, upon receipt of a written records transfer request, signed by the patient, must comply by utilizing any of the following:

1. Forward original or copies of the xrays in questions, to another licensed health care provider, not to the patient.

2. Forward a complete xray report to the requesting doctor.

3. Set up a mutually convenient time when the requesting doctor can view the xrays in your office. The above must be carried out even, if there is an outstanding balance on the patient's account. Failure to discharge such responsibility could be constituted unprofessional conduct.

Massage Therapy Holds Promise for Low Back Pain

Massage therapy helped reduce pain and improve function more rapidly than usual medical care in people with chronic low back pain, according to researchers at Group Health Research Institute and the University of Washington in Seattle, the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, and the University of Vermont in Burlington. The purpose of the NCCAM-funded trial—published in the Annals of Internal Medicine was to compare the short term and long term effects of structural massage, relaxation massage, and the usual care for people with chronic low back pain. Back pain is an important health problem that affects millions of Americans and is the most common medical condition for which people use complementary and alternative medicine practices, such as massage therapy.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

Since I lift weight I know the benefits of strength training for your body. There is a high rate of osteoporosis among older women and that is another reason I recommend weight training for my female patients. Pumping iron builds bone density, which prevents osteoporosis.

Tips for a Safe Workout.

Take time to warm up:
A five to 10 minute warm up brings blood into the muscles and prepares them for a safe workout. Stretching exercises are a great way to accomplish this.

Keep an eye on the woman in the mirror:
Lifting weights in front of a mirror encourages exercisers to keep track of their posture. Stand straight: keep your shoulders back; your head held high; abdominals tucked in; gluteals tight; and knees slightly bent.

Keep moving those muscles:
Avoid resting between exercises—maintaining an elevated heart rate makes strength training more aerobic.

Variety is the spice of life:
Alternate your weight lifting routine to prevent boredom.

Remember to cool down:
Post workout stretches are just as essential as warm up stretches. Give your muscles a chance to "cool down." Your body will thank you by no succumbing to soreness later.

Don't "weight" Make an appointment for a chiropractic check up and ask Dr. Kindred for information to help your workouts.

Martha's Massage Moment

It's not just pampering: research shows muscle therapy provides a long list of health benefits. As good as a back rub from your sweetie feels, sometimes you need the hands of a professional. That's because a growing body of evidence suggests muscle therapy provides a long and varied list of health benefits. In fact, more people get their muscles kneaded and rubbed for medical purposes than they do for relaxation or pampering, according to a recent survey. You know massage helps reduce stress tension; here are some more potential benefits:

Boost immunity. Massage may give the immune system a boost by helping to increase activity levels of natural killer T cells, which fight off viruses and tumors. Past, preliminary science suggested full body massage enhanced immune function of women with breast cancer; a newer but also early study on premature babies came to a similar conclusion: Those who received massage therapy had more active killer immune cells (and gained weight faster), compared with infants in the control group.

Call for an appointment or press the Schedule Now button to receive a massage at the introductory $24 rate, even if you have had a massage from me previously. This offer is good until November 30, 2015. I look forward to seeing you soon!!

Dr. K's Korner

The following outline includes research supporting chiropractic as a highly effective, natural and safe approach for specific extremity joint disorders:

Ankle Answers

According to a recent study, adjustments to the ankle encourage speedy healings of sprains. The investigators evaluated 30 patients with subacute and chronic grade I and grade II ankle inversion sprains. Half received adjustments to the ankle joint and half received a placebo treatment (five minutes of ultrasound therapy with the ultrasound turned off). Treatment lasted four weeks and consisted of up to eight visits.

Compared with the placebo group, subjects who underwent adjustments enjoyed significantly more improvement in measure of pain reduction, ankle range of motion and ankle function (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2001;24:17-24).

Gnarly Knees

Knee pain is associated with a restriction in the joint connecting the two bones of the lower leg (tibia and fibula). This joint—the tibiofibular joint—is located at the outer base of the knee. When the knee joint is out of alignment, the kneecap (patella) may be thrown slightly off track during walking and other activities requiring the knee to bend. One study demonstrated that not only can chiropractic adjustments subdue knee pain, they also help the kneecap (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1990;13:539-49).

Martha's Massage Moments

Lifting

Have you ever lifted something and immediately said "I shouldn't have done that." Lifting is something we do every day. When we lift we need to do so with proper body mechanics. Here are some guidelines to follow when lifting to prevent back injury:

1. Stand close to the item you are lifting. Spread your feet should width apart. Place one foot slightly in front of the other for balance.
2. Squat down slowly, BENDING at the KNEES. Tuck your chin in while keeping your back as straight as possible.
3. Get a firm grasp of the item before you begin to lift.
4. Slowly straighten your legs, lift slowly.

Take care of yourself! Do your best to avoid injury.

But remember when accidents happen, Dr. Kindred and Martha are here to help you get out of Pain and get healthy. We look forward to many years ahead as being part of your health care team. We look forward to seeing your Smiling Face.

Dr. Kindred's Korner

Wonderful Water it effects our eyesight, hearing and sense of balance. It also affects every cell, organ and muscle in your body. Ironically, most people are running on empty and suffering the disastrous effects of dehydration. I know just how important water is to maintaining health and preventing illness. This "drink or sink" issue is vital to the health and well being of children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens. People often ask how much water should I drink each day. There is a new, more exact standard emerging. Start with your body weight, divide the number in half and that is number of ounces you should drink each day. If you weigh 150 lbs, you need a minimum of 75 ounces per day.

Why hydrate? Keeping hydrated is one of the best ways to prevent disease. Symptoms of dehydration include muscle ache, back pain, fatigue, weakness, lethargy, sunken eyes, dizziness and headaches. Researchers now think fluids, particularly water, can play an active role in reducing the risk of some diseases. According to Susan Kleiner, PHD, of the University of Washington, those diseases include kidney stones, urinary tract cancer and colon cancer (Environmental Nutrition 1999; 22:10).

Avoid Aches and Pains

H2O is an essential cellular building block of joint-cushioning connective tissue. Throughout the body, joints that lack hydration are prone to injury and arthritis. In the back, dehydration may stress muscles and joints, triggering a spinal condition known as vertebral subluxation. Restricted movement in the spine characterizes this common disorder, which is associated with backache as well as many other conditions. It may also involve misalignment of the spine (vertebrae). I correct subluxations with a gentle and effective maneuvers call chiropractic adjustments, which have been shown to effectively ward off vertebral subluxations and the disorders associated with them.

Martha's Massage Moments

Massage and the Need to Drink Water. The main reason you need to drink water after a massage is because massage causes you to become dehydrated.

Your massage therapist finds "tight" muscles. The massage therapist works the tightness out of your muscles. When the muscle loses the tightness and the blood starts flowing any water that is in your blood stream is transferred to your muscle causing the blood stream to have less water. If you do not drink water, you may feel light headed and nauseated. Drink water before and after massage.

Come on by to our new location in the Community Chiropractic Holistic Clinic. Our gift to you is a $24 massage, even it you have had one before. Offer ends November 30, 2015. Call for an appointment at 480.968.7984 or press the Schedule Now button below.
